Living in Clapton

Chatsworth Road, Lower Clapton, Homerton & the Marshes

Chatsworth Road closed to traffic on a Sunday, Millfields and the Lea ten minutes east, Homerton at the other end of the walk. Our office is at number 57, on the street itself.

What it's like to live here

Our office is at 57 Chatsworth Road. Sunday is market day: more than fifty stalls, 10am to 5pm. There's been a market here since the 1930s. It used to run most of the week, then faded out around 1990. Residents and traders brought it back in 2010. Since August 2025 the stretch between Dunlace Road and Blurton Road is closed to cars on Sundays, 6am to 8pm, so the stalls use the road as well as the pavement.

The rest of the week it's a high street of independents. Venetia's has been doing the coffee at number 55 since 2006. Millfields Coffee is at 145 by the park. Leo's at 59 turns from café to Sardinian bar and restaurant in the evening. Round the corner on Lower Clapton Road: Mambow, My Neighbours the Dumplings, 107 Wine Shop & Bar, and Pages of Hackney.

Millfields Park sits at the bottom of Chatsworth Road: three pieces of open space, laid out as a park in 1884, with plane and elm avenues, tennis, cricket and a community orchard. The Lea Navigation runs along the east side. South on the towpath: the old Middlesex Filter Beds, now a nature reserve, and Hackney Marshes. North: Springfield Park and the Anchor & Hope at High Hill Ferry. No barbecues in Millfields.

Homerton is the south end. From Chatsworth Road it's often the more useful station. Stratford in six or seven minutes on the Mildmay line, Highbury & Islington in around nine, and it's step-free from the street. Sutton House is on Homerton High Street, built in 1535 and now National Trust (usually open Fridays and Sundays 11am to 4pm; check ahead as hours vary seasonally). Chats Palace is in the old Carnegie library. The Chesham Arms on Mehetabel Road closed in 2012 and reopened in 2015 after a two-year residents' campaign. Well Street still works as a local high street. Traffic filters on Barnabas, Ashenden and Meeson Roads, from 2020 and later made permanent, have taken a lot of through-traffic out of those streets. You notice it on a viewing.

Most of the housing went up in one go. The London & Suburban Land Company laid Chatsworth Road along an old field path and built Clifden, Glenarm, Elderfield and the rest of Clapton Park between about 1867 and 1873. That's why the side streets look alike. There's also post-war council, a fair amount of ex-council, two- and three-flat conversions, and older houses nearer the pond. Hackney's first three conservation areas were designated here in 1969, but a lot of the Clapton Park grid sits outside them. Check the address, not the postcode. Upper and Lower Clapton also tend to price differently.

Clapton station, up by the pond, is about twelve minutes to Liverpool Street on the Weaver line, no changes.
